Pearson Canada

Development
As a developmental editor for Pearson Canada, I have guided dozens of higher education projects from proposal to final manuscript and published text. The development process includes big picture issues such as author management, addressing market needs, and evaluating peer reviews, as well as the finer details of editing the manuscript, ensuring consistency and relevance, controlling length, researching photos and permissions, and meeting deadlines. While my own expertise is English and the humanities, I have developed and edited resources in subjects ranging from accounting to Aboriginal studies, economics to education, consumer behaviour to community development, management to modern languages, sociology to social work, and police studies to political science, as well as auto mechanics, business communications, criminology, emergency medical training, labour relations, marketing, nursing, office administration, physical education, and the very wide world of psychology.

Production
Production editors take over where developmental editors leave off by coordinating copy editing, design, photos and art, composition, technical reviews, proofreading, permissions, and indexing. As a freelance production editor for Pearson, I managed the production process, ensuring quality control from vendors, incorporating stakeholder input, and solving problems as they arose, all while meeting publisher specifications on budget, length, and in-stock date.

Media
My experience in educational media includes online courses, learning management systems, and other media assets in both a development and production role. While book projects follow a traditional trajectory, media projects require flexibility, non-linear thinking, and creative solutions. As a media editor, I have worked in a variety of constantly changing platforms and authoring tools, re-developed existing content for digital use, worked with and trained subject matter experts, worked closely with media developers, addressed needs of multiple stakeholders, and worked closely with large project teams in an ever-changing landscape.

COSTI Immigrant Services

COSTI Immigrant Services is a Toronto-based agency that serves newcomer communities in the Greater Toronto Area. COSTI also provides support and resources to settlement partners across the province and develops programs with the support of various levels of government. As a writer-for-hire, I have adapted existing resources and developed new resources, including handbooks for newcomers and international students, fact sheets, workshop guides and presentations, and training materials for settlement workers. Recent projects include materials for the Orientation to Ontario program, International Student Connect, as well as international student guides for the City of Toronto and the Province of Ontario.

University of Toronto Press

My two-person team worked with the University of Toronto Press on a yearlong consulting project in their higher education division. We analyzed UTP’s existing educational publishing program and then outlined a new approach to editorial development and production of instructor ancillaries to accompany textbooks.

BlueAppleWorks

For many years, I have copy edited and proofread books, catalogues, and marketing materials for BlueAppleWorks. I have also written several titles produced by BlueAppleWorks for a variety of publishers. I also do substantive edits, copy edits, and proofreads for BlueApple’s books on a regular basis, using my educational background to ensure texts meet reading-level requirements.

Thompson Education Publishing

As both an in-house senior editor and freelance editor, I worked in various capacities on different projects in social work, sociology, Aboriginal studies, sport, and education, including James, Seeing Ourselves: Exploring Race, Ethnicity and Culture, 3e; Fenwick & Parsons, The Art of Evaluation, 2e; Hick, Social Welfare, 2e; and several titles in the Aboriginal Policy Research series.

Crabtree Publishing Company

As a regular author for Crabtree Publishing Company, I have written over a dozen books for children on a wide range of topics. I work with a variety of book packagers producing books for Crabtree on science, history, pop culture, sport, and social issues.
